forces of dilapidation

The network opens up events and natural disasters that happen over time and what were its effects in Chellanam. It digs deep into how these events that have occurred have impacted the lives of people and the environment around.

Chellanam got its first sea wall built in 1967. It was identified as an erosion prone area in 1978, that is when the government increased the height of the sea wall.

Tsunami, 2004 hit the shore of chellanam. Many houses were affected due to the tsunami. Cyclone Ockhi hit Chellanam in the year 2017. Ockhi caused massive destruction. The sea wall was damaged and sunken. Residents went on protests demanding coastal protection. The district administrator made the decision to build a Geotube seawall. Cyclone Tauktae hit the shore later in the middle of 2021.

The network majorly focuses on mapping out  construction and dilapidation that happens throughout these events. Deconstruction of sea walls, building new sea wall for coastal protection. Dilapidation of houses but again how do then these abandoned spaces be occupied.

The environment starts taking over the built form over the period of time, the dilapidated houses become a place for animals to live. Moss, grass start growing over because of the moisture present in the sand. The dilapidated structure then holds different affordances.
